Fire

"Never be afraid to sit awhile and think." - Lorraine Hansberry

"Tact is the ability to describe others as they see themselves." - Abraham Lincoln

Two of my friends buy lunch at Dairy Queen every day, but there's no way I can afford that, so I bring lunch from home and go along with them. Yesterday as we were walking back to campus before last period, we see several hundred students milling around in the middle of the bus loop. Was it a fire drill? They usually had those first period.

We asked someone what was going on. Turns out there had been a real fire in one of the buildings. After the administration had determined it was safe, everyone who wasn't at lunch went back to class, and we wandered around outside for another ten minutes. Yay: less class. During afternoon announcements, our principal said someone had set fire to a trash can in the boys' bathroom, and there was a 100 dollar reward for any information.

Today as we're throwing away our trash, I make some joke about how "Haha, how much you want to bet there's been another fire?" It wasn't so funny when we returned to campus and saw another fire truck.

Boys' bathroom. Trash can. Different building.

I'm just glad this is happening while I'm at lunch in case something goes wrong and no one notices until things get out of hand. Not that there's much flammable stuff in the bathroom, but...

  1. I knew this would be worth your posting. :)

I might need to get a lunch pass, but I haven't as of yet. I think that this chronic arson is stupid - not only in the dangerous sense, but one will be caught doing it over and over like that. And I hear that it's a federal offense and worth prison if the person is sixteen or up. Not that I have much (if any) sympathy, as there are several ways in which fire can be lethal.

  2. Titling your first post after an extended hiatus, "Fire" can provoke worrisome thoughts ;) Hope your school isn't reduced to a pile of smoldering rubble as you blissfully consume lunch at DQ!

  3. @Kenny Two weeks is an _extended_ hiatus? (And sorry. Everything's fine. :)

@Danny Federal offense or no, the official school board policy (this guy in my calculus class looked it up in the handbook) is only 5 days' suspension per attempt.

  4. Well, that's just ridiculous! I'll have to watch my back: my guess is that the bloke really has a psychological need for attention. I know people like that.

  5. Extended, by its very nature, implies a comparison with a normal value. So, if I post updates two weeks apart my reader(s)see(s) me as diligent, if you do it it is an extended hiatus (at least my impression of your update schedule is that it is normally more often), and if CNN does it we are probably entering the Zombpocalypse.

  6. But then what would be a normal hiatus? A couple of days? Does that count as a hiatus for a blog that has a rule about posting more than daily? (and now that school's started and gotten into the swing of things, it probably won't be more often at all.)

  7. Normal can only be discerned by observing current trends. Thus, a two week break between posts may seem abnormal now, since recent behaviors were influenced by an absence of school commitments, but soon it could become a less noteworthy occurrence.
